“Who is in your heart now?” – Studio Killers

“You’d better hold onto love.”
A timeless quote that is personified in the song “Who is in your heart now?” By Studio Killers. (From their self titled album, released in June 2013.
This is a virtual band, similar to the Gorillaz, in the sense that their videos and band members are 100% fabricated. The band members include: Goldie Foxxx, Dyna Mink, and the vocalist Cherry. The latter members are musicians.
I’ve recently found that the sexy European voice for Cherry, comes from Teenu Brunila, the lead singer of The Crash, and a man, at that! This shows a very versatile look at music and how one artist can use androgyny to have a wider range on ears listening to his voice. Be sure to Check out The Crash

So, back to this song, lets take a look at the lyrics:

Ooh, ooh, oh yeah
Ooh, ooh, oh yeah

Have you ever heard a calling
But you don’t know where the sound is coming from?
Sometimes love
Is talking in a whisper

Do you ever feel like falling
For someone you never though of falling for?
But without him,
Though you move, you’re getting nowhere

Tell me
Who is in your heart now
When Leonard Cohen is singing “Hallelujah”
Who is in your heart now
All your friends and foes, they thought they knew ya
But look who’s in your heart now
You scared yourself
You are all of a doodah

Oh, you gotta hold on to love
Oh, you’d better hold on to love

Have you ever found something
That you didn’t even know you’re looking for?
An answer
Though you didn’t hear the question

When the plane is shaking violently
You wonder will the sky change into heaven
And if all fails
Who is in your last thought then?

Tell me
Who is in your heart now
When Leonard Cohen is singing “Hallelujah”
Who is in your heart now
All your friends and foes, they thought they knew ya
But look who’s in your heart now
You scared yourself
You are all of a doodah

Oh, you gotta hold on to love
Oh, you’d better hold on to love

Ooh, ooh, oh yeah
Ooh, ooh, oh yeah

Oh, you gotta hold on to love
Oh, you’d better hold on to love

Oh, you gotta hold on to love

Ooh, ooh, oh yeah

Yes, I just copied and pasted these lyrics from another source.
Typing out lyrics:ain’t nobody got time for dat.

Okay, and now that I have my bluetooth keyboard on, this will go by much more swimmingly.

So at the beginning of this song, Cherry’s voice draws you in with the soprano calling and if that doesn’t make you listen to this electro ballad, then the start or the lyrics will.
At first we are talking about expectations and getting what you never expected in love. I think this speaks very truthfully to anyone’s soul as he ultimatum is that you never know what to expect with love, am I right?
“Though you move, you’re going nowhere.” Now, this can go into two sides: While in love, or while still awaiting love. When you’re in love, your emotional ties to that one person, if in true love, keep you at bay almost scared to proceed because you don’t want to create an adverse reaction. While waiting for love, you could be in love from a distance, scared to make the move, when you should have kissed him/her a long time ago. (I guess being in love, from my perspective is fearful)

I find the reference to Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” brilliant. This is a song we have all heard, and we have all felt the sorrow, the anguish, the love and the passion from it, and in every way it’s been covered or redone. Mixing this reference to the already underlying metaphors that Studio Killers have presented us with, if you understand the reference, you can get tied even harder into the sound here.

The last lyric I want to touch on is the repetition of “Hold onto love.”
This is the most true lyric we have in the song because we all can agree that once you find love, TRUE love, you have to keep it. If you are so lucky as to have held onto your love, I commend you. Though if you’ve had your love slip through your hands, then it’s time to reinvent your love for someone new.

This completes review 1!
Tell me what you think, and be sure to check out Studio Killers, and their Self titled album!

Until Next Time, stay innovative.
